Few things offer more excitement and anticipation than thinking about the amazing task of raising a child. What follows is some tried and true advice to guide you through the maze of bringing up a child.
If you are traveling with small children, always stick to their regular mealtime and bedtime routines, if possible. Traveling can be scary and stressful for young children. Maintaining the same mealtime and bedtime rituals makes it easier for children to acclimate to spaces like hotel rooms, which make sleep disturbances less likely!
Even though it is important to spend plenty of time with your kids, take time to relax alone. This allows you the keep your own identity, as well as that of being a parent.
Infants and toddlers should not consume soda, diet or otherwise. Have them drink either water, milk, or sugar-free juice. All of these drinks lack the harmful acids in soda and contain vitamins and minerals a growing child needs.
Always make time for yourself to do things that you like to do, without your children. Even if you are only able to get away for a one or two hours, ask a trusted friend or family member to watch your kids for you. If parents are not able to have some time to unwind, they will become highly stressed, which is not good for anyone in the family.
When a child walks to school, no matter their age, they should have reflective strips on their backpacks or clothing. You can find reflectors at hobby stores, hardware stores or your local safety coalition. This helps crossing guards and drivers see your kids better, especially when it’s early in the morning.
Remember that each child is a different person. A child-rearing technique that worked perfectly on an older child may be useless with his or her younger sibling. Not only does this include rewards, but punishments as well. You have to remember all the techniques you have used before.
When your family rules are termed with positive vocabulary, it reinforces peace over conflict and encourages your children to coexist. For instance, instead of saying “no hitting” as a rule, you can reposition it as “always be gentle when touching”.
Use this advice to become the best parent possible. Being A Parent is a unique experience and is different for everyone. There is no one right way to do any activity involved in being a parent. Apply the suggestions that are most appropriate for you and your relationship with your child. Childhood is all too brief; enjoy the exciting time you have while your children are still looking to you for guidance.
